New Strategies in Program Delivery:
To meet our goals and objectives, new strategies and approaches in case management and other aspects of program delivery were considered. Modular sessions in Caregiver Training Program were conducted in Belen sa Pasay, Belen sa Subic, Belen sa Batangas and Belen sa Angeles. In “Belen sa Quezon City”, talks on HIV/AIDS were being done inside the bars in coordination with bar owners and managers. “Belen sa Angeles” introduced the Accelerating Learning System in coordination with the Department of Education. “Belen sa Batangas” made an intensive entry into the Santa Clara community where ship prostitution is taking place and various outreach activities like block rosaries, rosary making, stuffed toy making, cosmetology, STI/AIDS campaigns, Christmas party celebrations were conducted within the community. “Belen sa Subic”, “Belen sa Angeles” and “Belen sa Cebu” were authorized by the government-owned social hygiene clinics to give health seminars and lectures at the clinic during the girls’ scheduled health consultations. “Belen sa GenSan” established better ties with the girls by holding simple birthday celebrations at the center. Nazareth Growth Home, QC and Bethany Transition Home, Lipa, had a 1 ½ month summer camp last May at Galilee Farm. When they went back to Quezon City last June, regular outdoor weekend activity at the park was done. Nazareth Growth Home, GenSan, created a Case Management Team with Sarangani social workers to ensure proper role delineation in helping referrals from them. Girls from Nazareth Growth Home, QC, who were enrolled in formal schooling were transferred to Bethany Transition Home in Marikina and Lipa.
Partnerships and Collaborations with Other Organizations:
Partnerships and coordination with key persons, other organizations and people at the community were done to share TW-MAE-W’s best practices as well as to learn from them. The TW-MAE-W assisted several organizations in implementing direct services program that are not within their expertise and in conducting researches.
TW-MAE-W tapped the assistance of Banahaw Sustainable Development Center in conducting herbal growing, marketing and cooking workshop to the residents of Nazareth Hrowth Home, QC; Bethany Transition Home, Marikina, and Bethany Transition Home, Lipa.
To have an in-depth research study of the problem of international child sex tourism, the Protection Project’s Executive Director, Dr. Mohamed Mattar, and Ms. Anna Koppel, Human Rights Program Coordinator, requested research partnership with TW-MAE-W. “The Protection Project” is a legal human rights research of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced Studies, John Hopkins University, in Washington, DC, USA.
International Peace Research Association (IPRA) requested the assistance of Sr. Sol in collating a directory of peace institutes and peace organizations within Asia and the Pacific.
The National Union of Workers in Hotel Restaurant and Allied Industries (NUWHRAIN), an ILO-assisted project, and TW-MAE-W forged an agreement for NUWHRAIN to provide medical check-ups and tutorials and other identified needs of TW-MAE-W’s girls. Sr. Nguyen Thi Quynh Tam of the Congregation of the Lovers of the Holy Cross Tanlap, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam had an immersion at TW-MAE-W because she would like to replicate the program in Vietnam.
TW-MAE-W became a partner of the Ateneo Institute of Social Order (OSCI) in helping students grow outside the academe by undergoing the Ateneo Labour Trials Program. Here is what the students learned in TW-MAE-W:
“There are things we need to learn in order to grow and become better persons.”
“I learned to admire and look up to them. Indeed, they are the humble heroines of our time.”
“I learned to go out of my way to get to know the other person.”
“I learned that work is more than just work, but a ministr y- a ministry to fulfill a mission, a mission to find joy”
“The labor trial was an opportunity for me to realize that I should not only know that I am fortunate, but also I should share with those who are not.”
“I learned the meaning of service.”
Setbacks:
The objective that has not yet been met is the program development of a new growth home in Cebu by early 2005. Construction of the building is still on-going; hopefully it will be finished and will fully begin its operation before 2006 ends. We are now in the process of looking for a qualified resident social worker and other key personnel to be assigned in the area.
Start-up funds for the construction of Bethany Transition Home, Lipa, and the development of Galilee Farm are needed to support the girls, women and their children who are in the process of moving on.
Perspectives:
For the next project period, we plan to begin the operation of Nazareth Growth Home, Cebu, and further development of Bethany Transition Home and Galilee Farm in Lipa. We would also like to finish the second and third part of our publication which will contain TW-MAE-W’s best practices and what our exposurists learned from us as well as an account about our HIV/AIDS ministry.
To ensure the sustainability of our project and organization beyond the grant period, we hope to improve the marketing of our income generating products so as to have a bigger market and to develop Galilee Farm and the Holistic Healing Center. The income derived from the Holistic Healing Center and the Galilee Farm would be able to sustain and cover some expenses. The women involved are appropriately compensated.
